The Decision No Daughter Should Have To Make

🤍 A GENTLE NOTE: This piece speaks about having to decide whether to remove a mother from life support. If this is part of your story and it feels too tender to revisit today, please protect your heart. You can come back when you feel ready.

When a daughter has had to decide whether her mother remains on the machines or is allowed to rest, please do not leave her alone with what comes afterward.

She may replay that room for years. She may remember every sound, every word she whispered and the exact moment the machines grew quiet. Even when she knows her mother’s body could no longer carry her, part of her may still ask, Did I do the right thing?

This is why tenderness must not be withheld. Do not mistake her composure for peace or her silence for certainty. What looks like strength may simply be a daughter surviving a decision she can never revisit.

Your compassion cannot remove what she had to do—but your absence can make her feel as though she must carry the decision, the doubt and the loss entirely alone. She has already released her mother. Please do not make her feel abandoned, too.
